Description
Nothing shouts "Spring!" like the newly opened flowers of the Claret Cup cactus. They are one of the very first cactus to bloom in the desert southwest, like this pair west of Tucson, Arizona. As the climate changes and warms, these cactus are blooming up to two weeks earlier than they did 20 years ago.
The Claret Cup cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus) is a favorite of desert gardeners with their stout, brilliantly colored flowers which stay open both day and night. The cactus grows in clumps with stems up to 10 inches long and forming a mass that can be upwards of 3 to 4 feet wide for a mature specimen.
