Description
Comet Neowise rises over the Santa Catalina Mountains northeast of Tucson Arizona. In the five weeks before the sudden arrival of the comet, the Bighorn fire had ravaged this mountain range. Now, with the fuel load burned up over the nearly 200 square mile area, the skies were clear enough in the pre-dawn hours for the comet to be seen rising just before sunrise.
The comet was discovered by NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission on March 27, 2020. It passed very close to the Sun on July 3rd, well inside the orbit of the planet Mercury. This very close passage by the Sun is cooking the comet's outermost layers, causing gas and dust to erupt off the icy surface and creating a large tail of debris. And yet the comet has managed to survive both this intense roasting and the massive gravitational forces.
Scientists were surprised to see the comet emerge from the Sun's glow on July 6th, because many a comet has disintegrated in such a close encounter recently. Once news got out I knew I had a single opportunity on the morning of July 8th to photograph this marvel. It was only visible for a few minutes after rising over the Santa Catalina Mountains before it faded into the morning light.
