Description
One requirement of living in the desert is to pay close attention to the immediate environment, lest you be surprised by an unpleasant experience. The behavior of the birds on a recent early morning told me that there was a snake nearby, and I came quite close before I noticed this large Western Diamondback Rattlesnake curled up between two rocks in the desert near Tucson, Arizona.
In respect to the lethality of its venom, I made this photograph using a 300mm macro lens. It was hunting birds at this time, and would only strike at me if it felt threatened, so I left it to lurk and prey.

Thank you, Alex! Yes, any time you get this close to a coiled rattler is quite the experiment...

Even with a 300 macro lens you are closer than I would want to be. That said, this is a very unique and creative image of one of nature’s amazing creatures.
Douglas Taylor replied:
Thank you for your kind compliment, Greta! Your wonderful words are most appreciated here... I always stay at least one snake-length away from these critters. At least, if I see them first!

Uh, no and no. I've never encountered one of them on my property which is fine with me. This is an amazing capture, Douglas. It makes it seem as if you are right there. That must have been quite an adrenaline rush. Featured in American Desert Southwest.
Douglas Taylor replied:
When I bought my house the previous owners stated they had never seen a rattlesnake here! I didn't believe a word. Just because you haven't seen or encountered one doesn't mean that they aren't there. I simply share their turf, because they were here long before I was. Besides, they do keep the packrat population under control... and they're darned good at exercising my adrenal gland on occasion. Thank you for your kind compliment, Jane! And I appreciate the support with the feature. Keep you eyes open!
