Description
"Follow the water’s flow from snow covered mountains as it streams and falls; to lakes, to rivers, and finally, to the sea."
From my poem "Welcome The Light", copyright by Douglas Taylor, 2018.
At full flow in the spring runoff of melting snow, the Sol Duc River thunders over one of four distinct waterfalls as it plunges into a crevice in the rocks we know as Sol Doc Falls. The Sol Duc River flow rages at over 20,000 cubic feet per second during the height of spring, almost three times the average flow of the Colorado River. And the sound it makes is enormous.
Sol Duc Falls is a classic location in the rain forest of the Olympic Penninsula within Olympic National Park, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I had visited several times before, and I knew that the spring snowmelt would have the river running high. What I did not expect was the thunderous sound it made as it crashed in four separate but parallel waterfalls into the chasm below. The spray billowed and boiled up from below, virtually concealing the falls from any distant view.
The conditions were perfectly atrocious when I saw the falls as they cascaded through the gaps in the rock. Cold, cloudy, rainy and dismal. Perfect lighting for the long exposures I needed to capture the spirit and power of the waters. What I was unable to capture was the enormity of the sound the river produced in full flow. Standing up close, the rocks shook from the force and the staggering volume sent me reeling back down the trail, deafened and stunned, with my ears ringing.

Great beauty comes in the form of a deafening roar in those parts. This is an utterly gorgeous photograph. I can't even imagine the hike you had to undertake to get there. It is not for the faint of heart. This sure brings back a lot of memories from years long past. L/F
