Description
The February full moon rises above the earth's shadow as the sun sets beyond the opposite horizon. According to the Farmer's Almanac the full moon in the month of February is commonly known as the "snow moon" or the "hunger moon", also the "storm moon".
I knew the moon would be rising just minutes before sunset on February 26th, 2021, and my goal was to capture the nearly full moon as it hovered over the horizon with the earth's shadow below it. Once the earth's shadow became distinct my original landscape composition with mountains east of Tucson, Arizona at the horizon was no longer attractive.
I was then inspired to simply focus on the moon as it shown through the magenta tint of the atmosphere above the cusp of shadow for this minimalist portrait. Moments before, the moon had been tinged yellow by the atmosphere, but as it rose and the evening light darkened it became the brilliant white orb we know so well.
