Description
Millions of stars and vast clouds of stellar dust of the Milky Way illuminate the late summer night sky in the forests on the south slope of ancient Mount Mazama in central Oregon.
The days journey to Crater Lake National Park had been very long, starting at Mount Lassen National Volcanic Park in the morning, and included a long drive around the Mount Shasta area before heading north over the Siskiyou Mountains into Oregon. I fueled up and grabbed a bite to eat at Medford in late afternoon, then wound my way east through the mountains along the Rogue River towards Crater Lake, still many miles away.
I ended up entering Crater Lake National Park by the north entrance, just in time to make some early evening photographs. This meant that I didn’t get to my camp site down on the south side until long after dark, and was pretty much exhausted. I found a camp site, parked and set to making a peanut butter sandwich for dinner when I looked up to see the amazing sight of the Milky Way shining through the trees. I set down the sandwich, grabbed my camera, and captured this image, “Milky Way, Mazama Forest”, by setting my tripod on the picnic table where I ate.
This image is formatted in the tall, slender 1:2 ratio for when a beautiful, bold and dramatic artwork is desired to fulfill a difficult design requirement. This and other similar photographs can be found in my Tall Vistas collection.
