Description
The ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) is one of the odd, signature plants of the desert southwest. It is a succulent, but not a cactus. (Remember; all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.) The ocotillo is a multi-branched shrub that can reach 35 feet in height and live to between 60 and 100 years of age.
Ocotillo branches are adorned with many long, sharp thorns, and where the thorn grows from the branch is where the leaves can be found. But only sometimes. The ocotillo will only leaf out in response to sufficient rain. The leaves are always ready to sprout, but won't do so until the plant has enough water reserves to make them. And when it does, they will leaf out within days and transform themselves from what looks like a collection of dead, thorny sticks into a lush, leafy dark green bush. In dry times, the plant will rapidly loose it leaves as a survival strategy as it relies on the chlorophyll within its stems for energy.
This photograph was made just as an ocotillo branch tip had begun to sprout new leaves after winter rains. The ends of the branches are festooned in early spring with brilliant red, tubular flowers favored by hummingbirds. The range of the ocotillo includes the low desert areas of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada and California and further south into Mexico.

Such amazing detail in this from the black tips on the thorns to the red rims on the leaves. Gorgeous image! I always love your descriptions, too. Thank you for taking the time to add such detailed information about your photos. Featured in American Desert Southwest.
Douglas Taylor replied:
Thank you, Jane! Sometimes I seem to spend as much time on the caption/description as I do making the photograph. Sometimes more.... I am glad that you appreciate my efforts.
