Description
The domed ceiling of the Palatine Chapel, Aachen Cathedral. This structure was built starting in 792 by Charlemagne. It was to serve as the chapel for Charlemagne's Palace of Aachen and was finished by 805. Charlemagne's Palace no longer exists, but the Palatine Chapel remains as part of the historic Aachen Cathedral in what is now Germany.
Upon Charlemagne's death in 814, his remains were entombed in the Palatine Chapel. Starting in 936 and continuing for almost 600 years all of the Holy Roman Emperors, 31 German kings and 12 queens were crowned under this dome. Aachen Cathedral is the oldest catholic cathedral in Europe and is a renowned destination for religious pilgrims. It is also on of the first dozen locations to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
