Description
The Bighorn Fire started in early June, 2020 with a lightning strike in the rugged Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area, north of Tucson, Arizona. It was soon raging out of control across the Santa Catalina Mountains. Here, on the west side of the mountain range the fire is consuming Romero Canyon as seen from Oro Valley looking up into the heart of the mountains.
Fire is part of the ecology of forests and mountains. For a century we have been attempting to tame it, only to tragically realize the error and futility of our ways. This part of the Catalina Mountains had not burned in our history, and trees upwards of 500 years old were lost, plus thousands of Saguaro cacti from the lower slopes.
