Description
"Rock Art, Banded Iron" is an abstract from a rock formation in the Ord Ranges, near Port Hedland in Western Australia. This banded iron is over 3 billion years old, and the striped pattern are alternating layers of golden tiger eye, silver metallic hematite, and red, brown, or black jaspilite. The blue layers are riebeckite. The Tiger Eye, which give this specimen of Banded Iron the 'Tiger Iron' nickname, is formed when the mineral crocodilite is replaced by silica and leached with the hydrous iron oxide geothite which gives it the golden tiger eye luster.
Each layer is a distinct ocean floor deposit laid down before the time when our earths atmosphere and oceans contained any oxygen, which is why the high concentrations of iron minerals. Intense heat and pressure metamorphosed these sediments and the tremendous pressure resulted in the folding of the rock. Even though this image is of a flat, polished slab, the metamorphosis that created the folding also aligned the crystals of the minerals in such a way that their reflection appears to create shadows within the folds.
