Description
This stunning accident of nature illustrates the wonderful palette of minerals that the petrified wood of the painted desert in Arizona is famous for, and this spectacularly colored abstract evokes a waterfall of silica quartz.
*******************************************************************************************************Some 230 million years ago, during the Triassic Period, a great flood swept across what is now the desolate, high desert of northeastern Arizona. The floodwaters carried with it many thousands of trees, large and small, and deposited them across the landscape. They were buried in the muddy sediments transported by these waters, and eventually covered by the countless geologic events of the passing epochs.
Buried in the oxygen poor mud, these trees did not decay. Instead, over time the wood absorbed the mineral rich ground waters that seeped through the rock formation that the mud and sediments had become. We have named these rocks the Chinle Formation, which is famed for its richly hued erosional formations called the Painted Desert. Over this vast period of time, the silica and mineral saturated waters replaced the inner cellular structure of the wood, producing the fantastic colors of this world famous fossilized wood.
Today, erosion has exposed these spectacular fossils across a large geographic area. The most exposed and easily accessed specimens are preserved and protected by the Petrified Forest National Park. These fossils were created by the high silica content ground waters that crystallized into quartz, which is much harder and more durable than the surround rocks, leaving the logs and chunks of petrified wood scattered across the surface of the land. However, outside of the park boundaries, petrified wood is being mined and sold for its exquisite beauty and bright, vivid colors.
The red colors are from traces of hematite; yellows from geothite; greens from magnetite; while the blues and purples are products of manganese dioxide. The pure white is simply silica dioxide, commonly known as quartz.
"Silica Falls" is one of many photographs of natural wonders to be found in my Rock, Minerals and Fossils collection.
