Description
The Sky Islands are the mountain ranges of the desert American southwest. These mountains typically tower many thousands of feet over the desert valleys and are home to much flora and fauna usually found in more temperate climates. This view of Thimble Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona after sunset also includes the much more distant silhouette of Kitt Peak, along with the telescopes at its summit nearly 70 miles away. The cool, dry air at the winter solstice allowed for the remarkable detail found in this photograph.
