Description
A solitary cow wandered into the foreground moments before, and looked straight at me as I opened the shutter to make this portrait of Texas Canyon. Then it trotted away down the trail.
Ancient and remarkable weathered granite defines Texas Canyon near the town of Dragoon, Arizona. Texas Canyon is small, located about 15 miles east of Benson, Arizona along Interstate 10 as it crosses the Little Dragoon Mountains.
The granite rock are rounded through a process called spheroidal weathering, a common phenomenon for granites on the surface in an arid, desert climate such as southeastern Arizona. This photograph was made at the height of the wet summer Monsoon season when all of the vegetation has turned lush and bright green.
The stagecoach route of the Butterfield Overland Mail passed through Texas Canyon from 1858 until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1862, when the stage line suspended operations. The canyon is historically within the range of the Chiricahua Apache, and Cochise made his last stronghold near here in the Dragoon Mountains during the mid-1870s.
So why the name Texas Canyon if it is tucked away in remote southeast Arizona? In the mid to late 1880s, David A. Adams, a Cochise County pioneer, moved to the area from Coleman County, Texas, soon to be followed by other family members. Descendants still live and raise cattle on the old family ranch here. The land soon became known to the locals as the canyon where the Texans lived, and finally took the moniker "Texas Canyon".

A beautiful scene Douglas....like and favourite. I especially like how you kept your wandering cow in the shot....it adds to the dimensions and shows just how huge this rock outcrop is.
