Description
Mount Adams is reflected at twilight by Lake Takhlakh in Washington State. The third tallest peak in the Cascade Range at 12,281 feet, Mount Adams is the forgotten giant of the Cascades. This broad stratovolcano lies 35 miles east of Mount St. Helens and within a rugged forest wilderness of jagged ridges, deep glacier cut valleys and wide, barren lava flows. For this reason, Mount Adams is isolated and relatively unknown. The fact that it hasn’t erupted within the last millennia has also helped keep it out of the public eye. This is not to say it is extinct like I was taught in public schools; 1,000 years is just a blink in the scale of geologic time. There are still active fumaroles at the summit just to show the world that it is merely snoozing.
The photographs I made of the heavily glaciated peak started with the late afternoon sun illuminating the lake and mountain together in a warm light, then casting the lake in the shadow of the forest and mountains to the west. Sunset turned the ice and snow of the mountain a rosy red hue, and then came the alpenglow as the sun set far to the west over the Pacific Ocean.
Finally, the twilight lingered as an electric blue which I photographed here.
