Description
The Hamma Hamma River is a little known jewel on the east side of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. It may not be very long, only 15 miles, but in that short span it falls over 5,000 feet, a huge gradient for a river. Particularly a river that carries as much water as the Hamma Hamma during snowmelt from the mountains of Olympic National Park in spring and summer.
I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a short time in the dark forest alongside these raging waters of springtime. Here the cold waters tumble over huge boulders as they plunge over the precipice of a waterfall toward Hood Canal at sea level below. The challenge to make this photograph was to attain a safe location with stable footing on the rocks above to make the long exposure with which to render the raging waters as an abstraction. All while keeping my paralytic fear of heights on a tight leash. The results of a misstep on the wet, slick and smooth rocks could be tragic.
Olympic National Park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lovely and powerful. I always enjoy driving through Hamma Hamm and saying the name as I tootle along and over the bridge. Saw a large herd of Elk lazing around in the grass and standing in the river one hot day. Came out of the forest to escape the bugs. LF
