Description
A hot wind had howled all night, but morning in Death Valley National Park was a gray overcast and I knew exactly what I wanted to photograph. The light cloud cover reduced the brutal contrast of desert daylight to allow me to make this abstract landscape of the erosional landforms of Zabriskie Point.
Death Valley is known for being one of the hottest places on earth, and yes, even in the spring it can be quite hot. But even more memorable is the wind. Constant, relentless force with gusting bursts of hot, dry air carrying enough sand content to feel like your skin is being assaulted by 120-grit sandpaper. If there were any trees to be found, their bark would be peeled off by the force. But there are no trees to speak of, and the wind blows unimpeded.
The landscape is what geologist term “erosional”, for that is the main force at work here. Death Valley itself is a north-south trending, deep basin between two towering mountain ranges. Telescope Peak, the highest point in the Panamint Range rises 11,300 feet west of Badwater. This funnels and accelerates the surface wind. But what really does the eroding here is water.
Precipitation is rare in Death Valley, ranging from 1.6 to 2.4 inches per year. But when it comes to the mountains, any rain will run straight down into the valley in flash flood, scouring the surface as it rampages over the rocks. At the valley floor, a large rain event will leave ephemeral lakes and salt pans after they evaporate. Zabriskie Point is a dramatic example of the power of a little rain in the desert of Death Valley.
