A lightning bolt within a summer monsoon thunderstorm over Tucson, Arizona reflects the cumulus cloud and rain column beneath to reveal the momentary illusion of a mushroom cloud rising over the city.
The large, stray and isolated thunderstorm (see "A Stray Summer Thunderstorm" in my collection) was memorable to say the least. Watching across the city from late afternoon sun into the twilight gloom I could see the storm continuing to dump copious rain, but with precious little lightning. Then things changed.
As the storm progressed it became more compact and shrank vertically. The disparity in electrical charge within the storm increased and it began a remarkable display of intra-cloud lightning. The vibrancy of the pink color it flashed was astonishing, and the amazing color is because there was still so much moisture left within the storm. It is the moisture content which will give lightning the appearance of a pink color at distance.
