Artist's Description
A late summer rainstorm graces the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of southern Colorado as seen from the roadside of Colorado highway 17.
The northern San Luis Valley of southern Colorado is essentially a closed basin with no significant drainage away to any rivers. The southern half of this long and broad valley is the headwaters of the Rio Grande River flowing south through Colorado, New Mexico, then along the Texas-Mexico border to the Gulf of Mexico. Located between the towering Rocky Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo mountain range to the east, the San Luis Valley is a high, cool desert with very little flowing water.
Most water is obtained by accessing groundwater which is reasonably plentiful due to the runoff of snowmelt and rain from those mountains. In this photograph the dry grasslands run dead flat all the way to the Sangre de Cristo mountains which are enjoying a rare late summer rain. Great Sand Dunes National Park is northeast of this location.
