Artist's Description
The summertime thunderstorm was not forecast, but by nightfall it certainly was very real. I wanted to get out ahead, or perhaps alongside it, but soon realized that would be a mistake for it was gaining speed and power like nothing I had seen for many years. Setting up in the most sheltered spot I could find on the fly, I aimed my lens at the heart of the approaching storm. Lightning played down close by on either side, and then this massive strike graphically lit up the night sky.
The heat of this single stoke of lightning was probably intense beyond imagination. Within a millionth of a second the temperature may have reached a staggering 50,000 degrees F., almost five times that of the sun's surface. Simultaneous was an enormous "CRACK!", followed momentarily by a shattering "BOOM!" of deafening thunder. Then the rains came. The storm was on, and what a storm it was.
