Artist's Description
The first rays of the sun kiss the majestic eastern face of Mount Whitney and the Sierra Nevada west of Lone Pine, California. At 14,505 in elevation, highest in the lower 48 states, the summit catches the first light before anything else. Slowly, the sun fully illuminates the sheer, mile tall granite wall and washes it with a blush of red.
The red tint is caused by the atmospheric phenomenon known as Rayleigh Scattering. As the sun fully rises to the level of the horizon the light passes through many miles of the atmosphere. The spectrum of the light is scattered as it passes through the air, starting with blue, which is why we see the sky as the color blue. The cyan and green wavelengths scatter next, followed by the yellow, which is why when the sun is low in the sky photographers can enjoy what they call the 'golden hour' of warm-toned light. That leaves the red, which travels the farthest and lit up the magnificent mountain with the rosy tones of first light.
