Description
The home of our third President, Thomas Jefferson, as reflected in the fish pond. This was a scene I once saw as a young child, and I had been wanting to make this photograph of it ever since. Sixty years on and I finally got the opportunity to return to this iconic building and scene in rural Virginia. I can tell you that I was a lot more limber then, for the staff thought I might have been having a medical emergency with the contortions I was in to make this photograph.
Jefferson started designing the home when he inherited the 5,000 acres of land it sat on from his father at the age of 26. He had built a home here by the 1770’s, but after the death of his wife and a long sojourn as Minister of the United States to France he returned and began rebuilding and remodeling, essentially re-imagining the house as the historic structure we revere today. Monticello is the only private home in the United States to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is prominently featured on the Jefferson nickel, as well as the reverse side of the $2 bill
.
The fish pond is a quaint feature of the west garden. This is where the live-caught fish were kept alive to provide fresh seafood for the kitchens long before the days of ice and modern refrigeration.
