Description
The first light of day reflects off of the sandstone canyon walls at Bryce Canyon National Park, and then back onto the erosional features deep within the canyon.
The dawn was still to come when I awoke that late summer day in 2012. I thought about going back to sleep, but the inner voice I sometimes hear told me that I really should get up because something special was coming. So I fumbled around in the cold and dark of the Bryce Canyon campground, made my breakfast and headed out. I drove along the park road watching the wildlife in my headlights wondering where, what, and why.
Where, I did not know. What, I figured must be the sunrise for there is no other reason to be up and about in the pre-dawn gloom. And why? Because sometimes I just know something grand is coming, and I just have to hope I recognize it when I see it.
The air was quite cool at the 8,100 foot crest of Inspiration Point, and the brisk breeze was unimpeded at that elevation. It wasnāt long before I was shivering in the cold and wishing the sun to come up just as soon as it could. Eventually, the eastern horizon brightened and finally the sun crested the horizon. The moment was certainly not one of Natureās more colorful or dramatic sunrises, and it left me questioning why I was really there. And the answer, like always, was to believe. And wait.
I had begun taking photographs of the hoodoos in the amphitheater to the north of me when I first saw it. Below and to the east in the direction of the sun, a section of the rocks appeared to begin to glow as if translucent in the morning light. I quickly moved to compose this landscape image, followed by a portrait capture.
As suddenly as it first appeared, the show was over. And I knew exactly why I was there.
