Description
Mount Hood looms large over the Upper Hood River Valley in Oregon. Mount Hood is one of the most iconic volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. It dominates the eastern Portland, Oregon skyline, rising over two miles into the air and 65 miles distant.
Yet Mount Hood was the most elusive of the Cascade volcanoes to my lens. Not that I didn’t have a number of opportunities to capture the 11,240 foot tall mountain that towers over the region. Unfortunately, none of the images I made really conveyed that strong sense of being in the moment with a beautiful landscape that I was looking for. Some I dismissed for technical reasons. But the truth be told, I just didn’t like the way the mountain looked, particularly in summer and autumn.
The mountain is a joy to behold if you can see it resplendent; draped with ice and snow during winter and spring. No vantage point that I found during the warm months could present the mountain in its majesty without.
My intent was to make a flattering portrait of this mountain in a way that conveyed its place in the natural landscape, and it wasn’t coming easily. Fortunate circumstances combined with a clear May morning allowed me to travel up the Columbia River and find this vantage point overlooking the Upper Hood River Valley with the magnificent mountain, resplendent in fresh spring snow and dominating the horizon.
At this time in my life I could barely walk, using a walker or wheelchair to get around. So how did I make this photograph? I had checked out the site many years before, so it was a simple matter of driving to it, and then rolling down the window. Happily, today I could hike to this location again if I wanted to!
