The Olympic Mountains are the first to see the weather systems that come ashore from the Northern Pacific, and as these storms pile up against the mountains they precipitate an enormous amount of rain and snow onto the mountains and the lowland rainforest below. The lower, forested reaches of these mountains receive up to 180 inches of rain which makes the forests into a very lush,temperate rain forest, the only one in the continental United States.
Venturing into these forests is akin to walking into a huge, natural cathedral. Very little light reaches the forest floor through the thick fir canopy high above, and the skies are typically covered by thick, low clouds. Even so, the copious moisture supports giant ferns, hanging and bark hugging mosses, and in the few remaining tracts of virgin forest, giant Douglas Fir, Hemlo...
