Artist's Description
The flower of the giant Saguaro Cactus (Carnegeia gigantea) is the State Flower of Arizona. The saguaro flowers open at night to be pollinated by the Sphinx Moth and bats, but also remain open in the morning hours to be pollinated by birds and bees, therefor increasing its reproductive chances.
The waxy white flower measure between three and four inches in length and usually blooms in May and June at the apex of the columnar cactus or its arms. A Saguaro will be at least 40 to 50 years of age before it starts to bloom. This photograph was made in the Tucson Mountains of Saguaro National Park west of Tucson, Arizona.
