Hiking back across the desert after photographing a spectacular Tucson, Arizona sunset I noticed a young saguaro whose many spines were reflecting the twilight. It was sufficiently dark that a full 30-second exposure was required to gather enough light to capture this unique view. A simple black cloth provided the backdrop.
The saguaro's growth comes only from the top, and the dense covering of spines helps to shade the cactus from the blistering hot summer sun. They also help to insulate the tender tips from the occasional winter freeze and frost. And yes, they also protect the young cactus from predation by desert creatures.

Thank you again, Alinna! No digital slight-of-hand here. Just a careful gauge of depth-of-field and a steady tripod for a single, 30-second exposure. Some evenings the afterglow light here in the desert is almost indescribable.
