Mother Nature rewarded me with one final lightning strike to close out the summer monsoon thunderstorm season near dusk at Saguaro National Park and Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona.
Now the saguaro cactus can rest easier, for lightning is the primary cause of premature mortality for the tall, iconic cactus silhouetted here. One lightning bolt striking a saguaro will immediately superheat the enormous moisture content of the cactus, flashing to steam and literally exploding the cactus. It does not necessarily mean the end of the cactus, because I have seen a few that did survive, though in much shorter stature. They even grew arms eventually!
