Artist's Description
Ancient and remarkable weathered granite defines Texas Canyon near the town of Dragoon, Arizona. Texas Canyon is small, located about 15 miles east of Benson, Arizona along Interstate 10 as it crosses the Little Dragoon Mountains.
The granite rock are rounded through a process called spheroidal weathering, a common phenomenon for granites on the surface in an arid, desert climate such as southeastern Arizona. This photograph was made at the height of the wet summer Monsoon when all of the vegetation has turned lush for the brief season.
The stagecoach route of the Butterfield Overland Mail passed through Texas Canyon from 1858 until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1862, when the stage line suspended operations. The canyon is historically within the range of the Chiricahua Apache, and Cochise made his last stronghold near here in the Dragoon Mountains during the mid-1870s.
