The names of some of the men and women who lost their lives during the Vietnam War with reflection of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and Washington Monument in the distance.
58,320 names are etched into the polished marble of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall located near the Lincoln Memorial in Congressional Gardens on the National Mall. The names are of the people who died as a direct result of their service to our country in the Vietnam conflict from 1956 through 1975.
The names are representatives of the tragedy that befell an entire generation of young Americans, and they are etched into 140 panels totaling nearly 500 feet in length, 250 feet each on two axis, and tapering from over ten feet to less than a foot in height. These panels are sunken into the ground with the earth behind them, and the Memorial was designed by then-young architect Maya Lin.
