Description
A Soaptree Yucca (Yucca elata) casts a long shadow across the pristine white gypsum sand dunes of White Sands National Monument. The Tularosa Basin where White Sands sits is nearly 250 million years old. Gypsum is a relatively common mineral, but not commonly found at the earth’s surface. Within the last 70 million years, tectonic forces brought the gypsum to the surface in the surrounding mountains. Rain dissolved the mineral and deposited it into a lakebed at the bottom of the closed basin. Winds have weathered the gypsum evaporite into fine grains and deposited them in a large dune field with crests over 50 high. The yucca plants which dot the dunes put down roots very deep to find water near the rocky soils beneath.
