Description
Deep in the remote deserts of southern New Mexico is an amazing natural feature we call White Sands. Here the dunes are a blinding, brilliant white and the skies a deep, intense azure blue.
But the dunes are not the quartz sand commonly found in deserts. The White Sands are really not sand at all, but an expansive, brilliant white landscape of dunes made from gypsum crystals. It is the largest of its kind on our planet and is now a National Monument. It is very different from common desert sand in that it is relatively cool to the touch because the blinding reflectivity reduces the absorption of the sun’s rays. And it comes from a very unique source.
The Tularosa Basin where White Sands sits is nearly 250 million years old. Gypsum is a relatively common mineral, but not commonly found at the earth’s surface. Within the last 70 million years, tectonic forces brought the gypsum to the surface in the surrounding mountains. Rain dissolved the mineral and deposited it into a lakebed at the bottom of the closed basin. Winds have weathered the gypsum evaporite into fine grains and deposited them in a large dune field with crests over 50 high. The yucca plants which dot the dunes put down roots very deep to find water near the rocky soils beneath.
