Description
Young saguaro cacti appear to climb amongst the boulders outside the fence of the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum located in Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona and adjacent to Saguaro National Park These saguaros are relatively young, and only a few have begun to put out arms which they do around 75 years of age. If they escape the threat of lightning they may live to be over twice that age.
In the foreground to the left is a creosote bush, also known as greasewood, plus a prickly pear cactus and a young, bright green-barked Palo Verde. At the far right is an Ironwood tree, as is another back in amongst the boulders next to a second Palo Verde. They may live to be twice and thrice the age of the saguaro cactus. Sharp eyes will spot a pair of barrel cactus just in front of them with ripening fruit at their crest in this late autumn scene. Such is the amazing diversity of flora in the Tucson Mountains of Southern Arizona.
