I had envisioned this image when I saw in early 1998 a crescent moon would be close to planets Saturn and Mars for one evening, with a good chance of the reflective phenomenon called ‘earthshine’ on the moon. I deliberately wanted to capture this composition with the deep blue of the night sky above the lingering glow of sunset. I went out and set up at my favored spot at Saguaro National Park west of Tucson, Arizona, then settled in to wait for the light.
As the moment approached I made my best guess for the exposure and got ready. Suddenly, just as the light got right, a high cloud started to form right in the middle of the frame! Oh, no! But as the cloud thickened it started to reflect the deep red of the distant sunset, and I realized that this irksome intruder was what would make the photograph. So I began exposing the film and captured the cloud forming, the colors deepening, and in sequence the cloud beginning to dissipate as the colors faded from the sky. I knew right then that our Creator had placed that cloud in the sky for me, and I was intended to make images to capture the beauty of our natural world! “Earth, Moon, Saturn and Mars” was the sixth image of the exposures I made that night. The magic of the moment has motivated me to continue making fine art photographs more than twenty years later.
