Description
Shiprock towers over 1,700 feet above the high desert of northwest New Mexico and is silhouetted against the twilight of dusk. It is the rugged remnant of a volcanic neck which erupted some 30 million years ago. The volcano, along with all of the landscape it stood on have long since eroded away, leaving this unique geologic feature and the dikes emanating from it exposed on the surface today.
To make this photograph from along what was the New Mexico Highway 666 some 25 years ago I borrowed a point and shoot film camera. Then I found an old fence post to place it on, used some stone chips to level it and held it down steady to make this one, long exposure.
