Description
A powerful pair of lightning bolts strike simultaneously during a wild August thunderstorm in Tucson, Arizona.
‘Range Safety’ is always important when chasing lightning, and one must pay close attention to the surroundings at all times. It is quite pointless to do this if you can’t come back, hopefully with good quality photographs. I try to make my lightning images say something about what it was like to be ‘this close’ to the storm, so I try to frame the photo to give the storm context within the landscape.
One active August night I had been capturing some very nice lightning striking in the city, and I became aware of more convection overhead. It was still dry, but I was beginning to feel the occasional rain drop. Then I felt the cool breeze coming down on top of me, which in the desert is Mother Nature's final warning, and I knew it was time to leave. I hurried back to my car and drove a mile off to the southwest looking for a place to keep shooting from. I found one just in time to capture the pouring rain and a spectacular, simultaneous double discharge of lightning, right about the place I had been standing just minutes earlier.
This image is formatted in the tall and slender, 1:3 ratio of the vertical panoramic portrait style. It is intended to provide powerful, unique, beautiful, tall and slender art to satisfy a difficult design requirement. It can be obtained in sizes up to 7 feet in height with astonishing clarity.
