Description
The Cascade Mountain range of Washington, Oregon and California is justifiably renowned for its many tall volcanos, from Mount Lassen in northern California to Mount Baker near the Canadian border.
Immediately east of Mount Baker rises Mount Shuksan, and the two mountains could hardly be any more dissimilar. Where Baker is an andesite volcano that is less than 100,000 years old, Shuksan is composed of greenschist, an oceanic basalt that has been metamorphosed when an ancient plate collided with the North American Plate millions of years ago. That collision resulted in Shuksan being thrust now 9,131 feet high into the sky where it collects sufficient snow to maintain a healthy set of glaciers.
Mount Shuksan is also one of the most photographed mountains of the Cascade Range. Near Artist’s Point on the flanks of Mount Baker to the west lies Picture Lake, and the view is one of the most sought after images among many photographer’s bucket list. Of course, it certainly helps when the weather cooperates as it did this fine July evening.
