Description
Sol Duc Falls is a classic location in the rain forest of the Olympic Penninsula within Olympic National Park, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I had visited several times before, and I knew that the summer snowmelt would have the river running high. What I did not expect was the thunderous sound it made as it crashed in four separate but parallel waterfalls into the chasm below. The spray billowed and boiled up from below, virtually concealing the falls from any distant view.
The conditions were perfectly atrocious when I saw the falls as they cascaded through the gaps in the rock. Cold, cloudy, rainy and dismal. Perfect lighting for the long exposures I needed to capture the spirit of the waters and forest. What I was unable to capture was the enormity of the sound the river produced in full flow. Standing up close, the rocks shook from the force and the staggering volume sent me reeling back down the trail with my ears ringing..
