Description
This sunset came as a phenomenal surprise. Literally. The location was on Hurricane Ridge, high in the Olympic Mountains of Washington in mid-April. I had not expected to capture a sunset from up there, and was happy when a nice sunset presented itself. But I couldn’t find a proper foreground that pleased me, and after the sun went down I went back to the visitor’s center facility.
I was quite shocked when I came back out. The sun was back in the sky! Or at least it appeared that way. It was an optical phenomenon I had not seen, nor even heard of before then. The apparition that I witnessed and photographed is actually the reflection of the sun, now many minutes below the western horizon, by ice crystals high in the upper layer of the atmosphere and clouds. It only lasted for a few moments, and I’ve not seen anything like it since that magical evening in the Olympic Mountains.
Olympic National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
