Description
Hundreds of slices and slabs of petrified wood are on display every year at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows, and a lot of the fun is in looking for odd abstract images to create from the fabulously colored fossils. "Hoop Dance" is one found from a slice of a tree trunk that originated near Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Quartz replaced the wood many hundreds of million years ago, while traces of hematite give us the reds, geothite the yellows, magnetite the bits of green, and manganese oxide is responsible for the blue and magenta hues. The annual growth rings give a wonderful accent to this abstract image.
