Description
The eastern face of the Sierra Nevada rises dramatically in early morning light from the high desert landscape in the Owens Valley near the village of Independence, California. The granite boulders in the foreground have been tumbled round by the great rushing waters of the spring snow melt from the tall peaks beyond before the water was commandeered by the City of Los Angeles of 100 years ago. Without this spring runoff, the Owens Valley is a harsh desert climate with precipitation similar to Death Valley about 60 miles to the east.
