Description
The American Southwest has five seasons. Autumn, winter, spring, dry summer and wet summer; the monsoon season. In early July a high pressure weather system will typically park over the four-corners area, causing moist warm air to be drawn over the desert from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California.
The intense heat of the desert day will cause this moist air to rise high into the atmosphere where it condenses into towering cumulus clouds. Eventually the tops of these clouds become supercooled and begin the process of becoming a thunderstorm. These storms are generally very localized, but still can be very powerful with much lightning involved. This photograph was made looking northwest of Tucson, Arizona after the sunset.
