Description
I had already stretched out in my sleeping bag and drifted off to sleep after a magnificent evening at Lake Takhlakh when I awoke to this magnificent scene of the Milky Way shining brightly over Mount Adams on a clear summer night.
Mount Adams, the third tallest peak in the range at 12,281 feet, is the forgotten giant of the Cascades. This broad stratovolcano lies 35 miles east of Mount St. Helens and within a rugged, roadless forest wilderness of jagged ridges, deep glacier cut valleys and wide, barren lava flows. For this reason, Mount Adams is isolated and relatively unknown. The fact that it hasn’t erupted within the last millennia has also helped keep it out of the public eye. This is not to say it is extinct for 1,000 years is just a blink in the scale of geologic time. Fumaroles are active at the summit, just to show the world that it is merely snoozing.
Lake Takhlakh is a small lake surround by the sprawling Gifford Pinchot National Forest 7 miles northwest of Mount Adams, and an unknown number of rough road miles south of Mount Rainier. It was another of those places chosen by examining topographic maps.
The lake sits at about 4,400 feet and almost 8,000 feet below the ice covered summit of Mount Adams. The north face of Adams is dominated by Adams Glacier, the second largest in the lower 48 states. It is a massive ice river that flows from the summit ice fields and cascades over a series of spectacular icefalls down a steep channel, eventually spreading into a large sheet extending down to the 7,000 foot level.
