Description
Tiger Iron Abstract is from a rock formation in the Ord Ranges, near Port Hedland in Western Australia. This banded iron is over 3 billion years old, and the striped pattern are alternating layers of golden tiger eye, silver metallic hematite, and red, brown, or black jaspilite. The blue layers are riebeckite. The Tiger Eye, which give the Tiger Iron its name, is formed when the mineral crocodilite is replaced by silica and leached with the hydrous iron oxide geothite which gives it the golden tiger eye luster. Each layer is a distinct ocean floor deposit laid down before the time when our earths atmosphere and oceans contained any oxygen, which is why the high concentrations of iron minerals. Intense heat and pressure metamorphosed these sediments and the tremendous pressure resulted in the folding of the rock.

Your Tiger Iron photo shows us that the amazing minerals of Earth are as varied and beautiful as birds and flowers.
Douglas Taylor replied:
Thank you Merridy. You are so very correct. It is a wonder what comes out of the rocks beneath our feet.
