Description
The giant Saguaro cactus is typically found to be growing under the protective cover of desert trees, usually the Palo Verde though occasionally they can be found under Mesquite or Ironwood trees. Birds deposit the seeds as they perch on the branches, and once sprouted the very slow growing Saguaro are protected from the cold of winter nights and the blazing sun of summer days by the thin shade of the tree limbs. Eventually, over the course of perhaps a century, the Saguaro will outgrow, if not outlive the ‘Nurse Tree’.
The Palo Verde as a ‘Nurse Tree’ is the Saguaro’s best bet because the cactus can compete with the tree for precious moisture. The Mesquite trees are tougher in this regard, while the Ironwood is the toughest. The saguaro roots are shallow, while the tree roots go very deep into the ground searching for water. They all make a good neighbor for a thirsty succulent, and even though the Saguaro may live for 200 years or more, the Palo Verde can live twice that, while Ironwood can live upwards of 5 times that lifespan.
This photograph was made in early spring in Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona.
