Description
The flowers of the hedgehog cactus are the sure sign that spring has sprung as they are usually the first of the Sonoran Desert cactus to bloom in early April. The flowers are magenta in color, and the fruit after pollination is globular which is edible when ripe. They turn a strawberry red, and have a taste reminiscent of strawberries as well. Virtually all of the desert animals except snakes relish the fruit.
