Description
I remember when I first downloaded this photograph, and thinking that it resembled the Ukrainian flag with the bright blue sky over amber fields. That was ten years ago, and today I am compelled to show this image as my public support for the people of Ukraine in their hour of existential crisis.
Respect for sovereign international borders and the rights of national self-determination are being threatened by Russia like Europe has not seen since Nazi Germany occupied the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia in 1938. It was the first big step towards the cataclysm we know as the Second World War.
It is my sincerest hope that the Western political powers can find the will and the unity of purpose to stop Vladimir Putin and the Russian desire for conquest dead in its tracks, before Europe veers onto a path of tragic conflict.
Ukraine has struggled for independence through the centuries with only brief moments of sovereignty. The previous period was for only a few years between 1919 and 1922 before the Soviets took power in the east with Poland dominating the west. Though the Soviets originally promoted Ukrainian nationalism and identity, the Soviets then committed a great genocide upon Ukraine through the 1930's by deliberately causing The Great Famine which killed millions of people.
The Second World War ravaged the country, killing some 6 million Ukrainians, and it remained under the heel of the Soviet Union as they plundered the Ukrainian economy through the Chernobyl catastrophe and subsequent dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990.
Russia has attempted many times since then to dominate Ukraine, but has been rebuffed at each turn. Now they are resorting to using armed military force to subjugate the free people of Ukraine.
Surely the remainder of the world must remember the compliance of our political leaders in the late 1930's and never again allow such atrocious behavior by any nation. Ever!
.............................................................................
This photograph was made using my concept of using the light and energy passing through the lens of my camera to "paint" an image. I had a vision, but was blind to it until I developed a method to add time and motion to the equation. "In Support Of Ukraine" is a product of this quest and technique. It transforms architectural features such as pillars and beams into fantastic shapes, scenes and apparitions quite impossible to perceive with the human eye.
.............................................................................
"In Support Of Ukraine" is created solely by a photographic technique relying on the focused light and energy of a single exposure in the camera to offer a different visual reality... A reality of light through time and motion.
