Description
Arising like a ghost on the horizon, Mount Jefferson looms tall into the gloom of a mid-summer's twilight and dusk in the Central Oregon Cascade Mountains. Jefferson is the second highest peak in Oregon at 10,495 feet, more than twice the height of the surrounding mountains, and it is located in a rugged wilderness roughly halfway between the Three Sisters to the south and mighty Mount Hood to the north.
This is one of my most ambitious and audacious mountain and sunset photographs, for it was made nearly 100 miles southeast from Mount Jefferson at the summit of Paulina Peak in Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
Jefferson is now a deeply eroded stratovolcano, perpetually covered in ice and snow, and was once likely the equal to Mount Hood in height. It last erupted between 40,000 and 140,000 years ago. Two periods of intense glaciation have reduced it to the rugged and picturesque form we see today, if we venture far into Oregon's Mountains of the Middle Kingdom.
CONTEST WINNER: 3rd Place. "Mountaintop Sunset of Sunrise" contest, sponsored by the Hotel Lobby Artworks art group, June, 2023.
