Description
A portrait of the iconic Multnomah Falls, one of the tallest in North America and certainly the tallest in the Pacific Northwest. It is located on the southern cliffs of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon in the Columbia Gorge National Recreation Area. The cliffs are basalts from the vast lava outpourings that flowed in from eastern Oregon and Washington during the late Miocene epoch 14 to 17 million years ago. These flows reached all the way to the Pacific Ocean shores over 100 miles to the west of this location.
The cliffs were formed much more recently, about 15,000 years ago with the great Lake Missoula Floods that carved the dramatic Columbia Gorge through the mighty Cascade Mountain Range. The total drop of Multnomah Falls is 627 feet with two tiers. The upper is a dramatic 542 foot tall cataract, while the lower falls another 80 feet with the remaining distance the drop from the upper to lower falls.
I didn't know what to expect when I arrived on an early, smoky grey autumn morning. I feared the falls would be a a mere trickle compared to the strong torrent flowing in spring. But Multnomah Falls is fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain high above, so I needn't have worried.
