Description
A one hour-long exposure looking directly north over the dramatic granite rocks of Bear Canyon in the Catalina Mountains northeast of Tucson, Arizona shows the Earth's rotation as star trails around Polaris, the 'North Star'. A detailed examination will show that Polaris is not exactly north, but close enough to be a useful guide in the night sky. It is very bright in this long exposure because it is relatively bright and moved very little during the one hour the shutter was open. This location was chosen for its dark skies and dramatic rock formations, also the proximity of Tucson allowing for city lights and late night traffic to illuminate the canyon walls.
