Description
The flower of the night blooming Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii) begins to unfold in the dusky gloom of evening. The flower bud is long and tubular, and when ready to bloom unfolds rapidly after the sun goes down. The trumpet shaped flower remains open all night long, hopefully to be pollinated by the sphinx moth, and wilts with the dawning of the morning sun.
The flower blooms from April through October with ample rain, is predominantly white, up to about eight inches long and four inches in diameter, and on some the rim of the flower is tinged bright blue as in this case here. Common throughout the desert Southwest and Mexico, the plant is considered poisonous and is said to be a mild to potent hallucinogen. Georgia O'Keefe found the trumpet shaped flowers so attractive that she made many famous paintings of them.
